AIP Best student Oral Presentation Award
Congrats to Tim, who won an AIP Best student Oral Presentation Award at the 2023 ANZCOP-AIP Summer meeting in Canberra, for his talk titled ‘Directional emission in an on-chip acoustic waveguide’ !! π₯³ππ (find out more about this research here)
2023 ANZOS Postgraduate Prize
Congratulations to Ray Harrison for being awarded the 2023 ANZOS Postgraduate Prize! The Award seeks to recognise outstanding contributions by postgraduate students to the field of optics and photonics in Australia and New Zealand. Well done Ray! π
Congrats Jesse!
Congratulations to Jesse, who recently received the 2023 Ehrenfest-Afanassjewa award for best thesis in physics defended at a Dutch University! πΎπΎπΎ
Integrated magnetometers
Optomechanical magnetometers enable highly sensitive magnetic field sensing. In this work, we demonstrate integrated magnetometers with high sensitivity and dynamic range in ambient conditions, using off-the-shelf portable electronics without compromising sensor performance.

Welcome Nicole and Daniel!
Welcome to new group members Nicole Luu and Daniel Harvey, who will be working in the superfluid team! Nicole comes from UC Santa Barbara, where she worked in Dirk Bouwmeester’s lab, and Daniel is joining us from King’s College London. It’s great to have you, and looking forward to lots of cool science!
Paper out in PRL
Amy’s paper, which proposes a novel protocol for continuous optical-to-mechanical quantum state transfer in the unresolved sideband regime is now published:

Nice work Amy, James, Warwick!
Using entropy to drive optomechanical resonators
In our latest paper, we show that entropic forces can exceed the radiation pressure force by eight orders of magnitude, and use this to achieve phonon lasing with a threshold three orders of magnitude lower than previous work!
Go check out the paper here https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.ade3591 and

ARC Center of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology
Huge congrats to Warwick on his successful Center of Excellence bid !!! π₯³ππ π π
The new ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QBIC) aims to pioneer paradigm-shifting quantum technologies to observe biological processes and transform our understanding of life. It will drive fundamental knowledge and innovation across manufacturing, clean energy, agriculture, health and national security, and develop quantum technologies that go far beyond what is possible today, from portable brain imagers to superfast single protein sensors. Find out more on QBIC’s website: https://www.quantum-biotechnology.org/
Glen on the pod
On the Clear as Quantum pod this week: our own Glen Harris! And talking about the finer things in life, too: superfluid vortices and adventure racing.
βQuantum leapβ is often used in marketing or general society to imply a significant advance, but in quantum physics it actually describes the smallest possible change!
