Physics Colloquium: Bringing quantum to life

11 Apr 2025

Abstract

Quantum technologies, like quantum computers and quantum sensors, allow us to see things that are otherwise invisible and to perform computations that would otherwise be impossible. This promises a deep transformation of the life sciences. Advances in microscopy have transformed society, from the discovery of cells, to the origins of diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, to today’s medical imaging technologies that are fundamental to early diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. Computing advances have been even more transformational, changing almost every aspect of how we live our lives. Quantum technologies promise another leap forward. The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology, or QUBIC, seeks to lead the advances developing cutting edge quantum technologies for life sciences applications, and catalysing application of them across health, drug development, energy and agriculture. It is the first national Centre anywhere in the world at the interface of quantum and biotechnology. In this Colloquium I aim to introduce you to quantum biotechnology, giving examples of active research in the Centre.
